at the Mummer’s museum (part one)
July 29th, 2006
Emily (L), age 17. Liza (R), age 18.
These two young ladies were outside of the Mummer’s Museum trying to buy tickets to the sold out Diplo/Bonde Del Role/CSS/plus an open bar show before it kicked off. They struck me as very European feeling, since you tend to see girls in Paris dressed like they were (check the Face Hunter blog in the links). I guess you could also say they had an NYC feel. Needless to say, I stopped them for a few questions.
Me: “What inspires your fashion?”
L: “Abba. (laughs)”
E: “Last night we went to see Jens Lekman, a Swedish band, and they’re all very Swedish and wear a lot of white, so that was my inspiration…”
Me: “What would you like to see more or less of on the streets of Philadelphia?”
L: “More rollerblades. I mean rollerskates. Rollerskates.”
E: “Less jersey culottes-”
L: “Culottes?”
E: “Gaucho pants..”
Me: “And so what’s your current obsession?”
L: “Brazilian cities.”
E: “Minigolf pencils.”
Fun girls. Gracious enough also to allow me to fumble around with my friend’s camera until I got a halfway decent picture of them. Phew!
“I’m definitely influenced by street culture, underground street culture. I guess it’s like a new kind of fashion wave, like Hollertronix is, just a mix of skate and urban and.. It’s comfy, it’s fun. I’m all for street culture. I’d like to see more really dope girls’ sneakers. Less of girls trying to dress in ways that don’t flatter their bodies. Love yourself and know yourself to wear the right size. It’s your size!”
“Do you have any predictions for what to see on the streets?”
(briefly mentions her boyfriend’s uncanny ability to predict trends) “I think the next big thing is gonna be the Hundreds. They’re a street wear company, just coming out with a street wear line for girls called Brown Babies. I think we’ll see a lot more street wear for girls, and lots more girls stepping up in the scene…”
Current obsession: “My olive hi-top Dunks. Oh, and my vintage Dior sunglasses.”
Camila (L), age 19, and Bree (R), age 20.
Camila requested they be listed as sisters. After agreeing to this, I asked what their fashion inspirations were.
B: “Eurotrash.”
C: “I’m from New York – all you need to know.” (laughs)
Me: “How would you describe your looks?”
B: “Clean or readily available.”
Me: “What would you like to see more or less of on the streets here?”
B: “I’d like to see more of tapered jeans and fanny packs and big sneakers.”
Me: “Big sneakers?”
B: “Yeah, like, big sneakers.” (points to a pair of Missy Elliot sneaks her friend is wearing)
Current obsession: For Bree it’s dots. For Camila, doorknocker earrings. Hear, hear, Camila. But I think most Philly girls (at least where I’m from) love doorknocker earrings.
I had spotted Luisa early on in the night, but didn’t get a chance to actually stop her until it was too late. Turned out she was the leader singer in one of the bands performing that night, CSS, and she had to run off to set up.
“Can we do questions later?”
“Sure!”
Oh but we were too busy dancing by then…
More pictures from the Diplo Mummer’s show tomorrow!
Post Script: So some of the pictures are dark and grainy. This is what happens when you ain’t got no flash on the camera when you take pics in a dim room. Dang. I tried.
